Understanding Reiki
Purpose of Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. It is based on the belief that life force energy flows through all living beings and that this energy can be channelled to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
The term "Reiki" combines two Japanese words:
• Rei (universal)
• Ki (life energy)
The primary purpose of Reiki is to balance the body’s energy flow, facilitate relaxation, and support the body's natural healing processes.
Uses of Reiki
1. Stress Reduction and Relaxation:
Reiki helps calm the mind and body, reducing stress and anxiety. It induces a state of deep relaxation, similar to meditation or yoga.

2. Pain Management:
Practitioners often use Reiki to alleviate chronic pain, headaches, and tension by balancing energy flow, which may reduce discomfort.

3. Emotional Healing:
Reiki can help individuals process difficult emotions, promoting mental clarity, peace, and emotional resilience.

4. Support During Illness:
While not a substitute for medical treatment, Reiki is often used alongside conventional therapies to enhance recovery, ease side effects, and improve overall well-being.

5. Enhancing Spiritual Growth:
Many people use Reiki as a tool for personal and spiritual development, connecting with their inner selves and fostering a sense of purpose.

6. Improving Sleep:
Reiki sessions often improve sleep patterns by calming the nervous system and promoting deep rest.

7. Boosting Immune Function:
By promoting balance and reducing stress, Reiki may indirectly strengthen the immune system, helping the body defend against illness.

In-person reiki
In a traditional in-person Reiki session, the practitioner uses their hands to channel energy.

Here's how it typically unfolds:
Preparation:
• Environment: The session usually takes place in a calm, quiet space with soft lighting and soothing music.
• Recipient Position: The recipient lies fully clothed on a massage table or sits in a comfortable chair.
Techniques:
• Hand Placement:
The practitioner places their hands gently on or just above specific areas of the body, typically starting at the head and moving down to the feet.
o Common positions include the forehead, shoulders, chest, stomach, and limbs.
o No pressure or manipulation is applied, making it a gentle process.
• Scanning (Byosen):
Some practitioners begin by scanning the recipient’s energy field to identify imbalances or areas needing attention.
Session Duration:
• A session usually lasts between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the recipient’s needs and preferences.
Common elements of reiki sessions
• Breathwork:
Both practitioners and recipients often focus on breathing to enhance relaxation.
• Intention Setting:
Practitioners set a clear intention for healing or energy balancing.
• Grounding:
Sessions often end with grounding techniques to ensure the recipient feels centered and present.
Reiki sessions are generally safe and adaptable, making them suitable for people of all ages and various conditions.
